Following his decisive election victory in Mogadishu, Somalia’s new House speaker vows to strengthen global parliamentary ties as part of a comprehensive strategy to elevate the nation’s international standing. Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur Jama, who previously served as Somalia’s Minister of Ports and Marine Transport, officially assumed office after securing 142 votes in a legislative ballot conducted by the House of the People. In his inaugural address to lawmakers, Speaker Jama emphasized that expanding parliamentary diplomacy will serve as a foundational pillar for his administration, aiming to build robust, bilateral partnerships with foreign legislatures and international parliamentary assemblies.
The newly elected legislative leader brings extensive foreign service experience to the post, having previously served in strategic diplomatic roles at Somalia’s embassy in Turkey before holding key cabinet positions. In his initial remarks from the parliamentary rostrum, Jama highlighted that his background in international relations will facilitate deeper exchanges, technical cooperation, and inter-parliamentary dialogue. He noted that enhancing external partnerships remains vital for supporting domestic legislative reforms, advancing constitutional priorities, and bolstering democratic governance across the Horn of Africa.
Following the official vote, the speaker received congratulatory communications from regional leaders and foreign parliamentary bodies, including an early diplomatic exchange with Dileita Mohamed Dileita, speaker of Djibouti’s National Assembly. Diplomatic representatives and international observers noted that the smooth leadership transition within the lower house reinforces institutional continuity as federal authorities navigate crucial national legislation. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre both commended the election outcome, reaffirming executive branch commitment to working constructively with the legislative branch.
Beyond international engagement, Speaker Jama pledged to implement internal reforms aimed at improving working conditions, administrative support, and operational security for members of parliament.
