UK pledges $6.6 million to help Somalia prepare for Deyr floods as international partners rush to build resilience ahead of anticipated heavy seasonal rains. Announced by the British Embassy in Mogadishu during the Country Humanitarian Forum, the new five million British pound funding package is specifically designed to mitigate the severe weather risks expected during the upcoming October-to-December rainy season. The vital financial assistance aims to protect up to 600,000 vulnerable individuals, including families residing in nearly one hundred camps for internally displaced persons across high-risk zones such as Beletweyne and Jowhar.
The concerted preparedness initiative comes in response to growing meteorological warnings regarding intensifying weather patterns and potential El Niño impacts. Authorities and humanitarian organizations emphasize that proactive measures are crucial to preventing widespread displacement, agricultural losses, and infrastructure damage similar to previous climate shocks. By funding early warning systems and facilitating safe temporary relocations, the intervention seeks to empower local communities to move out of harm’s way before floodwaters disrupt major access roads and isolate rural settlements.
To maximize effectiveness, the financial support will be divided equally between two established humanitarian frameworks operating on the ground. Half of the allocation is directed toward the Caafimaad Plus program, led by Action Against Hunger, to sustain essential health facilities and expand mobile medical services. The remaining funds are channeled through the RESTORE program, delivered in partnership with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, the International Organization for Migration, and World Vision, focusing on cash assistance, livelihood protection, and local flood defenses.
International development officials stress that investing in anticipatory action significantly reduces long-term recovery costs and saves lives. As regional stakeholders coordinate preparedness strategies, the collaborative effort underscores a shared commitment to safeguarding Somalia’s most vulnerable populations against recurring climate volatility.
