Egypt, Somalia FMs discuss strengthening strategic partnership during high-level diplomatic talks held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and his Somali counterpart, Abdisalam Abdi Ali, convened to review bilateral relations and address critical regional security concerns affecting the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea corridor. The discussions focused heavily on expanding cooperation across economic development, investment, and institutional capacity building, reflecting a shared commitment to deepening diplomatic ties between Cairo and Mogadishu.
A central focus of the bilateral meeting centered on ongoing efforts to secure the swift release and safety of eight Egyptian sailors currently detained aboard a vessel off the Somali coast. Minister Abdelatty urged Somali authorities to maintain active engagement in resolving the maritime crisis, which stems from the hijacking of the oil tanker earlier in the year. Both diplomatic teams reviewed continuous communication channels involving Somali and Yemeni authorities, as well as the ship’s owning company, to guarantee adequate living conditions and ensure the safe repatriation of the captive crew members.
The ministers also evaluated broader geopolitical dynamics, including regional peacebuilding initiatives and the stabilization of maritime trade routes. Abdelatty reiterated Egypt’s firm support for Somalia’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, emphasizing Cairo’s total rejection of any unilateral actions that could threaten national stability. Furthermore, the discussions addressed the operational requirements of the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia, with both sides highlighting the vital necessity of securing sustainable international funding to support sustained counterterrorism and security sector reforms.
As both governments continue to coordinate closely on multilateral and bilateral fronts, the high-level dialogue underscores an expanding framework of mutual trust and strategic alignment.
