The African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) has strongly condemned a recent attack by Al-Shabaab militants on its troops in Buurane village, located in the Mahaday district of Hirshabelle State. The incident, which occurred on April 6, 2025, highlights the persistent threat posed by the extremist group despite ongoing efforts to weaken its operational capabilities.

According to a statement released by AUSSOM, the attack took place as Burundian peacekeepers under the AU mission were clearing a helicopter landing zone in Buurane. The militants launched a sudden assault, using roadside bombs and small arms fire in an attempt to disrupt the operation. However, the AU troops responded swiftly, repelling the attackers and eliminating one militant during the skirmish. Several AUSSOM soldiers sustained injuries but are reported to be recovering.

Sivuyile Bam, the Acting Head of AUSSOM, condemned the attack as a “cowardly act” and reaffirmed the mission’s commitment to supporting Somalia’s stabilization efforts. “The use of roadside bombs and ambush tactics will not deter our resolve to ensure Somalia achieves the lasting peace its people have been yearning for,” Bam stated. He commended the Burundian troops for their bravery and swift response, which minimized casualties and prevented further escalation.

The attack underscores the ongoing challenges faced by Somali and international forces in their fight against Al-Shabaab. Despite significant territorial losses and leadership disruptions, the group continues to launch attacks on military and civilian targets, aiming to destabilize the region and undermine Somalia’s progress toward peace and development.

AUSSOM, which replaced the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) earlier this year, plays a critical role in supporting Somali security forces and facilitating the transition of full security responsibilities to the Somali government. The mission provides logistical, operational, and stabilization support, working closely with Somali authorities to reclaim territory and strengthen governance in liberated areas.

The Somali government has also condemned the attack, emphasizing the importance of continued collaboration with international partners to combat terrorism. Deputy Information Minister Abdirahman Yusuf Omar Al-Cadaala praised the efforts of AUSSOM and Somali forces in countering Al-Shabaab’s threats. “Our joint operations are making significant progress, and we remain committed to eliminating the Khawarij and restoring peace to all regions of Somalia,” Al-Cadaala stated.

The incident in Buurane has drawn attention to the need for sustained international support to address the root causes of extremism and build resilience in conflict-affected communities. Humanitarian organizations have called for increased investment in education, economic opportunities, and social services to prevent vulnerable populations from being exploited by extremist groups.

As Somalia continues its journey toward stability, the attack serves as a stark reminder of the challenges that lie ahead. The bravery and resilience of AUSSOM troops and their Somali counterparts remain critical in the fight against Al-Shabaab and the broader effort to secure a peaceful future for the nation.
