The inaugural East Africa Somali Awards, held in Nairobi, has brought together business leaders, entrepreneurs, and dignitaries from across the region to celebrate the transformative role of Somali-led investments in East Africa’s economic development. The event, which took place on April 15, 2025, recognized individuals and businesses making significant strides in sectors such as logistics, technology, and hospitality, reinforcing the importance of cross-border collaboration in driving regional prosperity.

Somalia’s Ambassador to Kenya, Jabril Abdulle, emphasized the critical role of economic partnerships in uniting diverse communities and unlocking new opportunities. He highlighted Somalia’s formal entry into the East African Community (EAC) in 2023 as a historic milestone that allows Somali entrepreneurs to contribute meaningfully to the region’s growth. “The Somali people are defined by resilience and a deep-rooted entrepreneurial spirit,” Abdulle stated, citing the success of tech startups in Mogadishu and thriving enterprises in Nairobi’s Eastleigh as prime examples.

The awards, founded by Ridwan Yusuf, aim to provide a platform for recognizing successful businesses and fostering networking opportunities that accelerate economic impact across borders. Yusuf noted that Somali entrepreneurs have played a vital role in shaping East Africa’s business landscape, leveraging their adaptability and innovation to create jobs and strengthen trade networks. “This event is about celebrating excellence and inspiring the next generation of business leaders,” Yusuf said.

Among the notable figures at the event was BBS Mall CEO Munir Ahmed, who urged regional governments to create a more enabling environment for entrepreneurship through improved infrastructure and favorable policy frameworks. His sentiments were echoed by Lions Villas CEO Bishar Dhere, who encouraged business owners to embrace technological advancements such as artificial intelligence, noting its potential to enhance operations rather than displace jobs.

The awards ceremony underscored the growing influence of Somali entrepreneurs in East Africa’s economic landscape. From logistics firms facilitating seamless trade across borders to hospitality ventures redefining customer experiences, Somali-led businesses are driving innovation and fostering regional integration. The event also highlighted the importance of collaboration between governments and private sector players in creating sustainable economic opportunities.

As East Africa continues to evolve as a hub for investment and trade, the Somali business community remains at the forefront of shaping the region’s future. The East Africa Somali Awards serve as a testament to the resilience, ingenuity, and ambition of Somali entrepreneurs, reinforcing their role in building a more interconnected and prosperous East Africa.
