The Egypt Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, Alaa Farouk, held discussions with Somalia’s State Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, Asad Abdulrazak Mohamed, to explore opportunities for bolstering agricultural cooperation between the two nations. The high-level meeting took place during the Regional Forum on Accelerating the Transformation of Food Systems in the Arab Region, hosted in Amman, Jordan.

Presidential Directives from Egypt and Strategic Importance

Minister Farouk emphasized President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi’s directives to extend robust support to African nations, highlighting the importance of unity and collaboration across the continent. “Africa holds strategic significance for Egypt, and we remain committed to supporting our African brothers in various development sectors,” Farouk stated.

Key Areas of Agricultural Collaboration with Egypt

The discussions underscored Egypt’s willingness to share its wealth of agricultural expertise with Somalia. This cooperation is expected to focus on:

Water Resource Management: Egypt’s advanced strategies for efficient water usage could be highly beneficial for Somalia’s agricultural growth, particularly in mitigating water scarcity.

Crop Productivity Enhancement: Egypt’s success in boosting agricultural yields may serve as a model for increasing food production in Somalia.

Pest and Disease Control: The exchange of knowledge on preventing and managing agricultural pests and diseases could play a pivotal role in enhancing food security.

    Training and Expert Exchanges

Minister Farouk proposed sending Egyptian agricultural experts to Somalia and organizing specialized training programs for Somali farmers. These initiatives aim to build local capacities and strengthen the agricultural workforce in Somalia.

    Addressing Climate Challenges

Both ministers acknowledged that climate change presents a critical threat to agriculture in the region. Cooperation would also extend to tackling challenges such as drought and desertification, which affect agricultural sustainability and food production. Minister Farouk reiterated that joint efforts to mitigate these impacts could have significant positive outcomes for both countries.

    Looking Ahead: Strengthening Arab-African Cooperation

This meeting between Egypt and Somalia is a testament to Arab and African solidarity, aimed at achieving shared objectives such as enhancing food security and rural development. By leveraging Egypt’s agricultural expertise, Somalia stands to make substantial gains in modernizing its agricultural practices and tackling pressing environmental challenges.
