Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi expressed his keen interest in the recently signed Ethiopia-Somalia agreement, brokered by Turkey, and voiced hope that the pact would promote security and stability in the Horn of Africa. The Egyptian presidency issued this statement following a telephone conversation between al-Sisi and French President Emmanuel Macron.

The conversation underscored Egypt’s active role in regional peace efforts and its broader collaboration with international partners like France.

    Al-Sisi Highlights Regional Security Concerns

During the call, al-Sisi emphasized the close link between stability in the Horn of Africa and Egypt’s national security. He reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to supporting Somalia’s pursuit of security and stability, whether through bilateral cooperation or participation in African Union peacekeeping missions at Somalia’s request.

“Egypt is closely following the agreement recently reached between Ethiopia and Somalia through Turkish mediation,” the statement read. Al-Sisi expressed optimism that the agreement would align with international law principles and contribute positively to the region.

The Ankara Declaration: A Turning Point in Relations

The Ethiopia-Somalia agreement, formally known as the Ankara Declaration, was brokered by Turkey on December 12. It marked a pivotal moment in the often-tense relationship between Ethiopia and Somalia.

Key points of the declaration included mutual respect for sovereignty, unity, independence, and territorial integrity. It also outlined steps to enhance economic collaboration and regional stability.

Despite this progress, tensions remain high following Ethiopia’s controversial agreement earlier this year with Somaliland, Somalia’s self-declared independent region, to use the Berbera port on the Red Sea. This move had strained Ethiopia-Somalia relations until Turkey’s successful mediation.

    Egypt-France Collaboration on Regional Issues

The discussion between al-Sisi and Macron also touched on other regional developments. The two leaders exchanged views on strategies to enhance economic and investment ties, particularly by attracting more French companies to invest in Egyptian development projects.

The conversation reflected the strong relationship between Egypt and France and their shared interest in promoting peace and stability in conflict-prone areas like the Horn of Africa.

    Egypt’s Role in Supporting Somalia

Egypt has long been a key player in regional peacebuilding, offering assistance to Somalia through various initiatives. Al-Sisi reiterated Egypt’s unwavering support for Somalia’s stability and development, highlighting the importance of Somalia’s security to the entire region.

Through its participation in the African Union peacekeeping missions and bilateral collaborations, Egypt continues to assist Somalia in addressing security challenges and rebuilding its institutions.

Horn of Africa Stability Tied to Egyptian Interests

Al-Sisi’s remarks underscore Egypt’s vested interest in ensuring stability in the Horn of Africa. The region’s strategic importance, especially for Red Sea maritime routes, directly impacts Egypt’s economic and security priorities.

As Ethiopia and Somalia strive to implement the Ankara Declaration, Egypt’s diplomatic engagement signals its determination to play a constructive role in fostering long-term peace and cooperation.

    Hope for Lasting Peace

The Ankara Declaration offers a framework for Ethiopia and Somalia to resolve their differences and promote shared prosperity. However, its success depends on sustained dialogue, mutual trust, and adherence to international law.

Observers believe that Egypt’s involvement, along with Turkey’s mediation efforts, could strengthen the agreement’s implementation and help prevent future conflicts.
