MOGADISHU, SOMALIA – February 27, 2025 – Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed arrived in Somalia for high-level talks with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. The visit aims to build on the fragile reconciliation achieved through the Ankara agreement, which was mediated by Turkey in December 2024.

    Key Discussions

The talks will focus on security, politics, diplomacy, economics, and the fight against terrorism in the region. Both leaders are expected to address the media following their discussions, providing further details on the implementation of the Ankara agreement.

    Security Concerns

Despite the positive diplomatic developments, Somalia remains highly volatile, with the Islamist Al-Shabaab group maintaining a significant presence. Shortly after Abiy’s arrival, residents reported mortar attacks near the airport, although it was unclear if these were linked to his visit.

    Historical Context

Tensions between Ethiopia and Somalia escalated last year after Ethiopia struck a controversial deal with Somaliland, which led to a temporary withdrawal of Somalia’s ambassador from Ethiopia. However, diplomatic ties were fully restored in January 2025, following the peace deal mediated by Turkey.
