In a significant show of support for Somalia’s security efforts, the European Union (EU) has delivered new equipment to the Somali National Army (SNA). The official handover ceremony took place on Tuesday at Mogadishu’s General Dhagabadan Training Centre, with key EU and Somali defense officials in attendance. This equipment, provided under the EU’s European Peace Facility (EPF), is part of a comprehensive support package aimed at bolstering Somalia’s security forces as they combat al-Shabaab and other regional threats.

    Enhanced Mobility and Security Capacity

The new equipment delivered by the EU includes military trucks, life-saving supplies, communication devices, and counter-IED (Improvised Explosive Device) infrastructure. This enhanced mobility will allow the SNA to reach remote areas, transport personnel and resources more effectively, and respond quickly to security incidents. The support aligns with the ongoing drawdown of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), with the EU stepping in to strengthen its bilateral assistance to the Somali Federal Government.

EU, Somali Officials Highlight Partnership and Future Collaboration

The ceremony was attended by Mathieu Briens, Deputy Managing Director for Africa at the EEAS (European External Action Service); Karin Johansson, EU Ambassador to Somalia; Brigadier General Giuseppe Zizzari, EUTM (European Union Training Mission) Force Commander; and Omar Ali Omer, Somalia’s State Minister of Defense. “The EU’s assistance over the years has been invaluable to the Somali Armed Forces,” said Minister Omar, emphasizing the importance of EU contributions to the country’s defense infrastructure and security strategy.

EU and Somalia’s Commitment to Long-Term Security Support

In addition to this handover, the EU has allocated EUR 110 million to aid Somalia’s security transition, including non-lethal supplies and personal gear for Somali forces in the future. According to Mathieu Briens, this investment underscores the EU’s dedication to fostering a secure and peaceful Somalia, enabling the SNA to take on full security responsibilities in the region.

    Further Training Support from EUTM

The European Union Training Mission (EUTM) continues its work alongside Somali forces to enhance skills and operational readiness, further empowering the SNA to safeguard the country. The equipment donation complements these efforts, strengthening the partnership between the EU and Somalia in the shared pursuit of regional stability and peace.
