EUCAP Somalia, in partnership with the Ministry of Fisheries and Blue Economy, hosted a two-day workshop in Mogadishu from December 9–10, 2024, to address systemic barriers women face in the fisheries sector. The workshop aimed to empower women and promote leadership opportunities across the fisheries value chain, from aquaculture to sales, while focusing on sustainability and gender equality.
The initiative underscores Somalia’s commitment to fostering inclusive economic growth and reducing barriers to women’s participation in maritime industries.
Breaking Barriers in Fisheries
Women in Somalia’s fisheries sector contribute significantly but face challenges such as limited access to resources, lack of training, and inadequate representation in decision-making roles. This workshop featured sessions on gender equality policies, international legal frameworks, environmental policy design, fisheries governance, and business management.
The program was designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills needed to overcome these challenges and take on leadership roles.
A Vision for the Future
EUCAP Somalia Fisheries Expert Alberto Lopez-Asenjo emphasized the workshop’s significance: “This workshop is not an endpoint but a stepping stone toward empowering women as leaders and innovators in the fisheries sector. Together, we can ensure that women’s voices are heard, their contributions valued, and their potential fully realized.”
Participants left with practical strategies to enhance their roles in the fisheries value chain, contributing to both economic growth and community development.

The workshop concluded with participants receiving certificates of achievement in a recognition ceremony. Attendees collectively committed to advancing gender equality and sustainability in Somalia’s maritime sectors, marking a milestone in Somalia’s journey toward inclusivity.
