MYAWADDY, SOMALIA – February 14, 2025 – The European Union Naval Force (EUNAVFOR) Atalanta has successfully secured the release of a Yemeni fishing vessel, the Al Najma, which was hijacked off the northern coast of Puntland, Somalia. The operation was a response to a suspected pirate attack on the vessel, which was reported on February 8, 2025.

    Swift Response and Rescue

EUNAVFOR Atalanta deployed naval and air assets to the area, conducting an intensive search that led to the successful location and release of the hijacked vessel. The immediate presence of EUNAVFOR forces, particularly the helicopter, played a crucial role in ensuring the safety of the crew. The 12 crew members were found unharmed, and the alleged pirates had abandoned the vessel after stealing personal belongings and two skiffs.
