    – Firefighters in downtown Hargeisa fought a large fire in the Waheen market for several hours on Friday night.

The fire engulfed nearly the entire market, destroying at least 2,000 businesses and causing millions in losses.

By Saturday morning, firefighters had successfully put out the fire after battling it for several hours.

Officials are still assessing the damage, so the death toll from the fire is unknown. The cause of the fire is also unknown at this time.

Abdikarim Ahmed Mooge, the Mayor of Hargeisa, has appealed for help from Somaliland residents and international friends.

Several diaspora organizations have already mobilized to raise funds for those affected by the fire using crowdfunding platforms.

The fire started around 7:30 a.m. local time, just hours before it was announced that Saturday would be the first day of Ramadan.
