Security forces intensify operations against Daesh/ISIS strongholds, uncovering terrorist bases amid broader efforts to stabilize Somalia.

Security forces in Somalia’s semi-autonomous state of Puntland announced on Monday that an airstrike in the Bari region had resulted in the deaths of over 13 foreign Daesh/ISIS militants. This strike was part of an ongoing counterterrorism initiative aimed at dismantling terrorist hideouts in the region, according to statements from regional security officials.

In an official statement, Puntland’s counterterrorism unit confirmed that the airstrike, which took place within the last 24 hours, targeted ISIS militants in the Dhasaq area, located in the Calmiskaad mountain range. According to the unit, “more than 13 foreign ISIS terrorists were killed” in the operation. The statement also emphasized that such operations are critical in ensuring the security and stability of Puntland and the wider Somali region.

Security forces have also launched extensive operations in the Hararyo and Toga-Jeceel regions, further expanding their efforts to eliminate terrorist strongholds. These operations are designed not only to disrupt ISIS activities but also to prevent the group from regrouping and establishing new bases. A separate statement posted on X by the counterterrorism unit confirmed the discovery of bases that were previously used by ISIS operatives. Intelligence gathered from these raids will be instrumental in shaping future counterterrorism strategies.

While the authorities did not disclose which country conducted the airstrike, this attack follows a series of similar airstrikes carried out by the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM). More than a week ago, AFRICOM confirmed it had conducted airstrikes targeting ISIS militants in Somalia in collaboration with the Somali government, leading to the deaths of multiple ISIS-Somalia operatives. This suggests a continued effort by international forces to assist Somalia in its fight against terrorism.

Puntland’s security forces have been engaged in counterterrorism operations against ISIS for over a month, successfully reclaiming significant areas from terrorist control. This operation is part of a broader Somali-led campaign aimed at eliminating ISIS and other extremist factions operating within the country. Officials stress that securing Puntland is vital for national security, as terrorist groups frequently exploit the region’s mountainous terrain to evade detection.

Somalia has been plagued by insecurity for many years, with militant groups such as al-Shabaab and ISIS posing the primary threats to national stability. Al-Shabaab, in particular, has been waging an insurgency against the Somali government and the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) since 2007. ATMIS is a multidimensional mission endorsed by the African Union and mandated by the United Nations Security Council to support Somalia’s counterterrorism efforts. The mission provides critical training and logistical support to Somali forces, helping to strengthen their ability to combat militant threats.

In recent months, al-Shabaab has ramped up its attacks, particularly in response to Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s declaration of an “all-out war” against the group. The government has been working closely with international partners, particularly the United States, to counter the ongoing threats posed by these extremist organizations. Additional resources have been allocated to intelligence and surveillance efforts, ensuring that terrorist cells are identified and dismantled before they can carry out attacks.

The latest counterterrorism operations in Puntland represent a crucial milestone in Somalia’s broader fight against terrorism. By strategically targeting terrorist strongholds and eliminating key figures within these networks, security forces aim to diminish ISIS’s operational capacity and prevent the group from regaining control over liberated areas. The use of airstrikes has proven particularly effective in disrupting militant activities, making it more difficult for ISIS to maintain strongholds in Puntland’s rugged mountainous regions.

Despite these achievements, the fight against terrorism in Somalia is far from over. Experts highlight the need for sustained military pressure, intelligence-sharing, and international cooperation to combat the persistent threat posed by ISIS and al-Shabaab. These groups have demonstrated their ability to adapt and exploit vulnerabilities, necessitating a comprehensive and adaptive counterterrorism strategy. Local communities are also being engaged in counterterrorism efforts, with awareness campaigns aimed at preventing recruitment and radicalization.

The Somali government remains committed to restoring peace and security across the country. With continued military operations and support from international allies, authorities are determined to weaken terrorist networks and pave the way for long-term stability. Puntland’s latest offensive underscores the government’s resolve to eliminate extremist groups and protect its citizens from terrorist threats. Officials have reiterated their commitment to increasing military resources and improving intelligence coordination to ensure that terrorists have no safe haven in Somalia.

As the counterterrorism campaign continues, Puntland’s security forces remain vigilant, monitoring developments closely and adapting their strategies accordingly. The ongoing efforts serve as a testament to Somalia’s determination to combat terrorism and create a more secure and stable future for its people. The international community is expected to continue playing a supportive role in these efforts, reinforcing Somalia’s ability to tackle extremist threats effectively. The government hopes that by maintaining momentum, it can ensure long-term security and prosperity for the nation.
