MOGADISHU, SOMALIA – February 14, 2025 – The Somali government has announced a renewed military campaign against the militant group al-Shabaab. This decision comes as part of a broader strategy to stabilize the region and dismantle the threat posed by the group.

    Joint Operations with AUSSOM

The renewed operations are being conducted in collaboration with the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). AUSSOM, which replaced the previous AU Mission to Somalia (AMISOM) and later the AU Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), has been working closely with the Somali National Army (SNA) to enhance coordination and advance joint counter-offensive operations.

    UN Security Council Resolution 2767

The operations are in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2767, which mandates AUSSOM forces to support the Somali government in degrading al-Shabaab and other affiliated armed groups as part of the stabilization process. This resolution underscores the international community’s commitment to supporting Somalia in its fight against terrorism.

    Somalia Challenges and Concerns

Despite the renewed efforts, there are significant challenges and concerns. The transition from ATMIS to AUSSOM has brought both continuity and new challenges, including geopolitical tensions with neighboring Ethiopia and the ongoing threat posed by al-Shabaab. Additionally, there are concerns about the capacity of the Somali Security Forces (SSF) and the need for sustained international support.

    Future Somalia Prospects

The Somali government remains optimistic about the impact of these renewed operations. With continued support from AUSSOM and the international community, there is hope for a more stable and secure Somalia, free from the threat of al-Shabaab.
