In a significant development, Somali security forces have captured a senior commander of the Islamic State’s Somalia wing in Puntland. Abdirahman Shirwac Aw-Saciid, known by the alias “Laahoor,” was apprehended on Monday in the Cal Miskaad mountains, located in the northeastern Puntland state. Aw-Saciid, who headed the group’s assassination squad, surrendered to authorities following a weeks-long offensive against the militant group.

U.S. Airstrikes Support Efforts Against Islamic State

The capture comes just two days after U.S. airstrikes targeted the Islamic State leadership in Somalia, resulting in the deaths of several militants. The airstrikes were part of a broader strategy to degrade the group’s ability to plan and conduct attacks. U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth confirmed that the strikes significantly impacted the group’s operational capabilities.

Criminal Activities and Extortion by Captured Commander

Aw-Saciid was also responsible for extorting local businesses on behalf of the Islamic State, further highlighting the group’s involvement in criminal activities. The Puntland region, which has been a hotspot for militant activities, announced a major offensive against both the Islamic State and the al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabab group in December. Since then, several Islamic State bases have been captured, marking a significant shift in the region’s security dynamics.

    Major Victory for Somali Authorities

The capture of Aw-Saciid is seen as a major victory for Somali authorities, who have been struggling to reassert control over the region following more than three decades of civil war and lawlessness. The ongoing offensive has been supported by international partners, including the United States, which has conducted multiple airstrikes in the region.

Islamic State’s Growing Threat in Somalia

The Islamic State’s Somalia branch has grown in strength over the past few years, attracting foreign fighters and improving its revenue collection. The group’s adoption of more sophisticated tactics, such as the use of booby-trapped vehicles during attacks, has raised concerns among security analysts.

    International Community’s Support for Somalia

As the Somali government continues its efforts to combat militant groups, the international community remains committed to supporting these initiatives. The capture of Aw-Saciid is a step towards restoring stability and security in the Horn of Africa region.
