MOGADISHU, SOMALIA – February 20, 2025 – The Somali National Army (SNA), with the support of allied clan militias, successfully repelled a major pre-dawn attack by Al-Shabaab militants in the Middle Shabelle region. The intense fighting resulted in the death of 130 Al-Shabaab fighters.
Attack Details
The militants launched coordinated raids on several villages, including El-Ali, Daaru Nicma, Ali Fooldheere, and Al Kawthar. They used vehicles laden with explosives and engaged in heavy fighting with the SNA. Despite briefly capturing two villages, the militants were eventually forced to retreat.

Government Response
The Ministry of Information confirmed the successful repulsion of the attack and highlighted the significant losses inflicted on the militant group. The Somali government has been intensifying its military operations against Al-Shabaab in central and southern regions, with backing from African Union troops and international allies.
Ongoing Efforts
The SNA continues to target Al-Shabaab strongholds in an effort to dismantle the group’s control over southern and central Somalia. The recent operation is part of a broader crackdown aimed at stabilizing the region and restoring government authority.
