The Somali government has achieved a significant victory in its ongoing fight against Al-Shabaab, reclaiming control of the strategic Ruunirgood district in the Middle Shabelle region. The operation, carried out by the Somali National Army (SNA) and local forces on April 7, 2025, marks a major blow to the militant group’s presence in central Somalia and underscores the government’s commitment to restoring stability across the nation.

Ruunirgood, a key stronghold for Al-Shabaab, had long served as a hub for the group’s operations, enabling them to coordinate attacks and maintain supply routes between the Galgaduud and Middle Shabelle regions. The district’s recapture represents a turning point in the government’s efforts to dismantle Al-Shabaab’s infrastructure and reclaim territory from the insurgents.

According to District Commissioner Macallin Muxudiin Kulmiye, the operation was meticulously planned and executed, targeting Al-Shabaab’s defensive positions and key bases. “This victory is a testament to the bravery and determination of our forces. We have inflicted heavy losses on the militants and destroyed their operational capabilities in Ruunirgood,” Kulmiye stated. He added that security operations are ongoing to stabilize the area and remove landmines left behind by the retreating militants.

The SNA’s offensive was supported by local militias, who played a crucial role in the operation. Their collaboration with government forces highlights the growing unity among Somali communities in the fight against terrorism. The government has praised the militias for their contributions, emphasizing the importance of local engagement in achieving lasting peace.

The recapture of Ruunirgood is part of a broader campaign to eliminate Al-Shabaab’s presence in central and southern Somalia. The government has intensified military operations in recent months, reclaiming several key territories and disrupting the group’s logistics and recruitment networks. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has reiterated his administration’s commitment to eradicating Al-Shabaab, describing the group as an existential threat to Somalia’s sovereignty and stability.

While the victory in Ruunirgood is a significant milestone, challenges remain. Al-Shabaab continues to carry out deadly attacks, including bombings and ambushes targeting civilians and security forces. Analysts warn that the group’s ability to adapt and regroup underscores the need for sustained efforts to dismantle its infrastructure and address the root causes of extremism.

Humanitarian organizations have also expressed concern about the impact of ongoing military operations on civilians in conflict-affected areas. Displacement, food insecurity, and limited access to healthcare remain pressing issues for communities caught in the crossfire. Aid agencies have called for increased support to address these challenges and ensure the safety and well-being of affected populations.

As Somalia intensifies its efforts to combat Al-Shabaab, the focus remains on achieving lasting peace and stability. The recapture of Ruunirgood serves as a reminder of the progress being made, but also of the work that lies ahead in building a secure and prosperous future for the nation.
