Somali Interior Minister Ali Yusuf Ali-Hoosh met with a high-ranking Finnish delegation on Thursday to discuss collaborative efforts in counterterrorism, electoral support, and regional stabilization. The meeting marked a significant step in Somalia’s ongoing campaign against al-Shabab and efforts to ensure long-term peace and development.

    Deepening Somalia-Finland Cooperation

The Finnish delegation, led by Ambassador Pirkka Tapiola, included officials from Finland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reflecting Finland’s commitment to Somalia’s security and development agenda.

“Our partnership with Finland is crucial in addressing the multifaceted challenges we face,” said Minister Hoosh, emphasizing the importance of international support in Somalia’s journey toward stability.

Ambassador Tapiola echoed these sentiments, praising Somalia’s counterterrorism initiatives. “Finland stands with Somalia in its journey towards peace and development. We are committed to supporting your efforts in every possible way,” he stated.

    Focus Areas of the Meeting

    Key topics of discussion included:

Electoral Support: Enhancing Somalia’s democratic institutions and processes.

Counterterrorism: Strengthening military operations against al-Shabab to diminish their influence.

Regional Stabilization: Expanding recovery efforts in conflict-affected regions.

The Finnish delegation also expressed interest in broadening their assistance as Somalia continues its fight against terrorism and instability.

    Progress and Challenges in Counterterrorism

Over the past two years, Somalia has intensified military operations against al-Shabab, achieving some notable successes. However, progress has slowed in recent months, highlighting the need for sustained international support.

Minister Hoosh reiterated Somalia’s commitment to eliminating the militant group and fostering a secure environment for development. He praised Finland’s contributions as a testament to the value of international partnerships in addressing terrorism and promoting stability.

    Strengthening Global Alliances

The meeting reflects Somalia’s proactive engagement with international allies to overcome challenges and achieve national priorities. Finland’s continued support for Somalia, particularly in counterterrorism and peacebuilding, reinforces the country’s determination to secure a prosperous future.

As the Somali government presses forward with its stabilization efforts, partnerships like these remain vital in addressing security threats and ensuring long-term progress.
