    MOGADISHU, SOMALIA – February 22, 2025 – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud addressed a joint session of Parliament, marking the opening of its sixth session in Mogadishu. In his speech, President Mohamud focused on ongoing military operations against ISIS and Al-Shabaab in Puntland and south-central Somalia, the country’s security situation, and upcoming elections.

    Security Achievements

    President Mohamud highlighted the successful reestablishment of the Air Force and Navy, noting that they can now defend Somalia’s airspace and waters. He emphasized the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting Somali waters and combating illegal fishing. The President also commended the Puntland forces for their efforts against Khawarij militants and reiterated the government’s support for these operations.

    Counterterrorism Efforts

    The President noted significant progress in clearing Al-Shabaab strongholds and reiterated the government’s commitment to securing liberated areas. He also mentioned the ongoing military operations against ISIS in Puntland, supported by U.S. drone operations.

    Electoral Reforms

    Addressing electoral reforms, President Mohamud reassured citizens that Somalia is transitioning to a one-person, one-vote system, restoring their right to elect leaders directly. The National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC) recently announced that local council elections will be held in June, covering regions including Gedo and Khaatumo.

    Future Plans

    President Mohamud announced plans to establish Somalia’s first satellite launch center within the year, marking a historic milestone for the Horn of Africa. He also expressed gratitude to Parliament for finalizing the constitution during the previous session.
