Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud held strategic talks with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni in Kampala to strengthen bilateral relations. The meeting focused on security cooperation, economic development, and joint efforts to combat terrorism in the Horn of Africa region.

Key discussions revolved around the role of Ugandan troops in the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). Uganda has been a critical contributor to peacekeeping operations in Somalia, providing troops to support security and stability amid ongoing threats from Al-Shabaab militants.

A crucial topic on the agenda was Uganda’s proposal to establish new military bases in Somalia’s Southwest State. While the talks reportedly explored the logistics and strategic importance of these bases, the Somali federal government has not yet issued an official response.

President Mohamud emphasized the importance of continued collaboration with Uganda to enhance Somalia’s security framework and foster long-term peace. Both leaders acknowledged that joint efforts are essential in combatting terrorism and promoting regional stability.

Following his engagement with President Museveni, Mohamud traveled to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, to participate in an extraordinary regional summit addressing the ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The summit gathered regional leaders to discuss strategies for resolving the crisis and enhancing cooperation among East African nations.

The conflict in the DRC has posed significant security and humanitarian challenges, with various armed groups destabilizing the region. The summit aims to unite regional powers to find a comprehensive solution and promote lasting peace.

Somalia’s commitment to regional peace and stability was reaffirmed during the summit preparations. Somali officials highlighted their dedication to supporting initiatives that foster development, security, and cooperation in East and Central Africa.

President Mohamud’s active involvement in the DRC peace summit signals Somalia’s growing engagement in regional diplomacy. As the country continues its recovery from decades of conflict, Somalia seeks to position itself as a key player in fostering peace and stability within the African continent.

The president’s participation in high-level meetings and peace conferences underscores Somalia’s desire to strengthen diplomatic ties and contribute to collective efforts in resolving conflicts across the region. The Somali government has reiterated its readiness to collaborate with neighboring nations to address common security challenges and promote economic development.

As regional leaders seek solutions to complex security and political issues, Somalia’s proactive role in peace initiatives reflects its determination to emerge as a stable and influential nation in Africa. With continued engagement and cooperation, the country aims to foster a more secure and prosperous future for its citizens and neighboring states.
