At his office in Mogadishu on Sunday, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud hosted Josep Borrell, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the Commission.

Mohamud and Josep Borrell talked about advancing their ties and the EU’s assistance to Somalia.

President Mohamud spoke about the government’s strategy for reviving the army, liberating al Shabab-held territory, averting famine and drought, and putting Somali-led agreements into action during the meeting.

For development plans, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud emphasised the significance of international assistance.

Josep Borrell, Vice President of the Commission and High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, praised President Mohamud’s initiatives and emphasised the significance of Somalia to regional stability.

I acknowledged the new leadership’s efforts to advance state-building in cooperation with federal member states and further promote economic reform efforts, and I welcomed Somali efforts in security and defence, including the potential of further enhancing cooperation with the European Union Naval Force. Somalia stabilisation remains crucial for regional security, Josep Borrell said.

In order to regain control over the maritime borders, the government has asked the European Union to generously contribute to halting trawling, illegal weapons, and environmental degradation. To do this, the Somali Navy’s construction has been accelerated.
