In a significant step towards sustainable energy development, the Somali government has announced the launch of a solar-plus-storage tender aimed at enhancing the country’s energy infrastructure. The tender, which seeks to develop a 12 MW solar and 36 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in the northeastern port city of Berbera, marks a major milestone in Somalia’s efforts to transition to renewable energy sources.
The Ministry of Energy and Minerals is spearheading the project, which is part of the Somali Electricity Sector Recovery Project funded by the World Bank. The chosen developer will be responsible for the design, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of the facility, along with the development of 13.5 km of 33 kV evacuation lines. The project is expected to take 15 months to complete, with a pre-bid conference scheduled for April 5, 2025, and a deadline for applications set for May 5, 2025.
The solar-plus-storage tender is the latest in a series of initiatives aimed at bolstering Somalia’s renewable energy capacity. In February, the government launched a 55 MW solar and 160 MWh BESS tender in Mogadishu, with a closing date of April 14. Additionally, a separate tender for 10 MW of solar and a 20 MWh BESS ran through January and February. These projects are part of a broader strategy to diversify Somalia’s energy mix and reduce its reliance on fossil fuels.
Somalia’s push towards renewable energy is driven by the need to address the country’s chronic energy shortages and improve access to electricity for its population. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Somalia had 51 MW of cumulative installed solar capacity by the end of 2023, up from 47 MW in 2022. The government’s ambitious plans aim to significantly increase this capacity in the coming years, leveraging the country’s abundant solar resources.
