Vice President Mohamed Ali Aw Abdi leads high-level talks with clan elders to resolve conflicts in Sanaag, Sool, and Togdheer, aiming for stability through dialogue and military integration

A high-ranking Somaliland delegation, led by Vice President Mohamed Ali Aw Abdi, arrived in Erigavo on Monday with the primary objective of promoting peace and integrating local clan militias into the national army. This visit comes at a crucial time, as tensions have escalated in the Sanaag, Sool, and Togdheer regions, prompting the government to seek a resolution through dialogue and reconciliation.

Erigavo Peace Talks Aim to Resolve Regional Conflicts

The delegation includes senior military officers and high-level government officials who are expected to engage with clan elders and community leaders. Their goal is to foster discussions that will pave the way for long-term peace and stability in the region. The officials have extended an invitation to traditional leaders, urging them to participate in a peace conference to address ongoing conflicts and grievances.

Government Urges Armed Groups to Join National Army

Speaking upon arrival in Erigavo, Vice President Aw Abdi emphasized the importance of collective responsibility in the peace process. “We have come here with a sincere mission to restore peace, and we call upon everyone to contribute to this noble cause. We pray for God’s guidance and protection, and we hope that this journey will mark a turning point in Erigavo’s history—a moment when peace is finally restored,” he stated.

Aw Abdi also highlighted the role of the armed forces in ensuring security and stability. He reassured the public that individuals currently bearing arms would be given the opportunity to integrate into the national military structure. “The primary duty of the armed forces is to safeguard public safety. We will work towards incorporating those who are currently armed into the Somaliland National Army so that they can contribute positively to maintaining order and protecting their communities,” he added.

    Humanitarian Crisis Worsens Amid Conflict

Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro also weighed in on the situation, reiterating that peace remains the government’s top priority. While acknowledging the necessity of deploying security forces to maintain stability in Erigavo, he stressed that dialogue should be the primary means of resolving disputes. “The government’s position is clear—peace is our number one priority. We believe in constructive discussions and negotiations as the best way to address conflicts and prevent further violence,” President Irro stated.

The visit by the Somaliland delegation comes amid rising tensions and an escalating humanitarian crisis in the region. Reports indicate that more than 40,000 families have been displaced from Erigavo due to clashes between Somaliland forces and SSC-Khaatumo militants. The ongoing hostilities have left many residents in dire conditions, with limited access to basic necessities such as food, clean water, and medical care.

Adding to the volatility, some traditional leaders in Sool and Sanaag have openly called for armed resistance against Somaliland’s administration. The leader of the SSC-Khaatumo faction, Abdiqadir Aw Ali Firdhiye, recently issued a statement in which he threatened to capture Erigavo. Firdhiye accused Somaliland forces of harassing local communities and warned that his forces would take military action if necessary.

The complex situation in the Sanaag region has been exacerbated by deep-rooted historical grievances, political disputes, and competition over territorial control. Clan affiliations and regional loyalties play a significant role in shaping alliances and conflicts, making reconciliation efforts particularly challenging. The Somaliland government hopes that by integrating local militias into the national army and fostering dialogue, they can de-escalate tensions and create a framework for sustainable peace.

Despite the challenges ahead, the government remains committed to pursuing a peaceful resolution. Officials are urging all stakeholders, including clan elders, community leaders, and political figures, to prioritize dialogue over violence. The delegation’s presence in Erigavo is seen as a step towards fostering trust and engaging with local leaders in a meaningful way.

The outcome of these peace efforts remains uncertain, as both sides hold firm to their positions. However, Somaliland’s leadership is determined to prevent further bloodshed and displacement. As the discussions unfold, the coming days will be critical in determining whether Erigavo and the surrounding regions can move towards stability or continue to be marred by conflict.

Ultimately, the Somaliland administration hopes that by demonstrating a commitment to peace, they can create a foundation for unity and cooperation among the region’s diverse communities. The integration of local fighters into the national army is just one step in a broader strategy to bring lasting peace to Erigavo and beyond.
