Authorities in Somaliland, a self-declared independent region in northeastern Somalia, have voiced their frustration over recent comments made by Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty. The remarks, which rejected a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Hargeisa and Addis Ababa, have sparked a diplomatic row and highlighted the complex geopolitical dynamics in the Horn of Africa.

The memorandum of understanding between Somaliland and Ethiopia, signed in January 2024, aims to enhance economic cooperation and regional stability. The agreement includes provisions for trade, infrastructure development, and security collaboration. Somaliland views this MoU as a crucial step towards strengthening its international relations and economic growth.

    Egyptian Foreign Minister’s Comments

During a joint press conference with his Turkish counterpart, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty dismissed the MoU, stating that it undermines Somali sovereignty. Abdelatty’s comments have been perceived as an attempt to delegitimize Somaliland’s efforts to establish itself as an independent entity separate from Somalia.

    Somaliland’s Response

In response to Abdelatty’s remarks, the Somaliland Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement expressing deep disappointment. The ministry described the comments as “inaccurate, misleading, and disregarding the sovereign rights of our people.” Somaliland reiterated its commitment to the MoU with Ethiopia, emphasizing that the agreement reflects mutual respect and shared interests between the two nations.

    Regional Implications

The diplomatic tension between Somaliland and Egypt underscores the broader geopolitical struggles in the Horn of Africa. Egypt has historically supported Somalia’s territorial integrity, while Somaliland continues to seek international recognition as an independent state. The rejection of the MoU by Egypt could strain relations between the involved parties and complicate efforts to foster regional cooperation.

The recent comments by Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty have added a new layer of complexity to the already intricate political landscape in the Horn of Africa. As Somaliland continues to assert its independence and strengthen its international partnerships, the region will need to navigate these diplomatic challenges carefully to maintain stability and progress.
