In a groundbreaking move, Somtel Somalia, a prominent telecommunications company, has officially launched its innovative eSIM card service. This cutting-edge offering marks a significant milestone for Somalia, being introduced by the company for the first time over two years ago. The eSIM card, unveiled in Mogadishu city on August 26, 2021, is poised to revolutionize the telecommunications landscape by providing subscribers with seamless access to a myriad of services without the need for physical SIM cards or router connections.

The array of services offered by the eSIM card encompasses calls, internet access, and the integration of eDahab, a comprehensive mobile money solution. The introduction of this service is anticipated to propel internet penetration and enhance connectivity among the populace, contributing to the nation’s technological evolution.

One of the distinguishing features of this pioneering service is its ability to grant subscribers internet access on their mobile phones without the necessity of traditional physical SIM cards or router links. This development has not only streamlined the process of having multiple SIM cards on smartphones but has also aligned Somalia with global technological standards. Moreover, Somtel Somalia has gone the extra mile to ensure accessibility for individuals unable to visit the company’s branches in person.

Somalia now stands as the fifth country in Africa to offer eSIM services, following in the footsteps of Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, and Senegal. Notably, this service, priced at a reasonable $4 per card, is primarily tailored for smartphone users and has proven to be a valuable solution for those with phones lacking conventional SIM card slots.

Abdullahi Amir, Commercial Manager of Somtel Somalia, emphasized the compatibility of the eSIM card with the latest smartphones, including the iPhone 11 and the newest Samsung models, during the launch event. He stated, “The eSIM-card supports the latest smartphones, such as the iPhone 11 and the latest version of Samsung phones.”

Mahad Omar Abdulle, Marketing & Public Relations Manager of Somtel Somalia, highlighted the transformative impact of the eSIM, stating, “The launch of the eSim transforms dependency on the physical card to a high-tech, subscriber-friendly virtual platform. With smartphones, eSims give the user much more flexibility in managing service plans.”

Adding a governmental perspective, Abdi Sheik Ahmed, Minister of Telecommunication and Technology of the Federal Government of Somalia, noted, “eSim Card makes it easy in taking up sim cards, and the intention is to keep up with the global progress in terms of technology.”

Founded in 2000, Somtel Somalia has emerged as a leading telecom and technology service provider with an expansive network covering the Somali region. The company’s commitment to core values is evident in its delivery of a forward-looking digital experience to telecom customers across Somalia, Somaliland, and Puntland, solidifying its position as one of the region’s fastest-growing mobile telecommunications providers.
