In a sign of renewed cooperation, Egyptian and Turkish officials recently held discussions focused on stabilizing the Horn of Africa and Red Sea regions, particularly given the ongoing tensions between Somalia and Ethiopia. This meeting, led by Ihab Awad from Egypt and Elif Ulgen from Turkey, emphasized regional security and counter-terrorism support for Somalia.
Shared Goals for Regional Stability
Egypt and Turkey have committed to collaborative efforts to ensure security in the Horn of Africa. Their talks covered military cooperation agreements with Somalia, including Turkey’s landmark defense pact signed earlier this year, which allows Turkish patrols in Somali waters. Egypt has also increased its involvement in Somalia through African peacekeeping missions, largely seen as a counter to Ethiopia’s influence following Ethiopia’s controversial maritime deal with Somaliland.
Easing Historical Tensions Over Libya
Egypt and Turkey also discussed Libya, where they traditionally support opposing factions. This marks a significant step in their reconciliation process, aimed at achieving peace in the conflict-ridden country. Both nations emphasized their intent to align more closely for the benefit of “brotherly Libyan people,” with continued dialogue expected.
Potential Turkish Mediation in Egypt-Ethiopia Dispute
Given Egypt’s ongoing Nile water dispute with Ethiopia over the Grand Renaissance Dam, Turkey’s influence in the region could allow it to mediate this long-standing conflict. The recent meeting suggests that both countries see the value in a strategic alliance, not only in the Horn of Africa but across shared interests throughout Africa.
