Uganda is gearing up for a significant milestone in its infrastructure development as contractors prepare to commence the construction of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) in March 2025. This ambitious project, which has been in the planning stages for several years, aims to enhance the country’s transportation network and boost economic growth by improving connectivity within the East African region.
The SGR project, which will extend from the Malaba border to Kampala, is expected to revolutionize Uganda’s transportation sector. The initial phase will focus on the Malaba to Kampala section, which spans approximately 272 kilometers. This phase is expected to be completed within 48 months, with subsequent phases extending the railway to other parts of the country and the region.
The SGR project has faced several challenges over the years, including funding delays and land acquisition issues. However, the Ugandan government has made significant progress in addressing these challenges, ensuring that the project remains on track. Compensation arrangements for people affected by the project have been finalized, with over 90 percent of residents displaced by the SGR project already compensated. The government has also secured the necessary funding and is working closely with international partners to ensure the successful implementation of the project.
