The Sky Blues won thanks to first-half goals from Phil Foden and Erling Haaland in the seventh and fourteenth minutes at Etihad Stadium.
Manchester City were reduced to ten men in the 46th minute as Rodri was shown a straight red card for abusive behaviour towards Gibbs-White.
Manchester City currently leads the table with 18 points, while Nottingham Forest is tenth with seven.
