According to local media, French police arrested 157 people overnight in nationwide protests following the death of a 17-year-old youth by police last week.

Protests have erupted in France since June 27, when a police officer shot and killed Nahel M. during a traffic stop in the Paris neighbourhood of Nanterre after he refused to stop.

The cop is being held in pre-trial detention after being charged with voluntary homicide.

Protests began in Nanterre and spread the next evening to neighbouring towns including as Lyon, Toulouse, Lille, and Marseille.

Following skirmishes between police and protesters, tensions increased.

Since the violent protests began, police have arrested hundreds of individuals, including 157 on the sixth night of turmoil, according to the daily Le Figaro.

According to the study, almost 350 fires were lit on public roads, and 297 vehicles were set on fire.

Mayors across France have asked for a march in front of all town halls on Monday to demonstrate support for the municipality of L’Hay-les-Roses, where Mayor Vincent Jeanbrun’s mansion was targeted with a burning vehicle on Saturday and Sunday night.

President Emmanuel Macron will meet with the presidents of the Senate and the National Assembly on Monday to address the latest situation, and the mayors of cities where violence has occurred will meet with him on Tuesday.

The death of a 24-year-old firefighter in a parking lot in the Paris district of Saint-Denis was reported on Monday by Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin on Twitter.
