    20 October 2021 – Liban Hassan

Jubaland President Ahmed Mohamed Islam (Ahmed Madobe) last night released a list of candidates for the remaining four seats in the Upper House.

Jubaland was the first administration to start the process for elections to the Upper House, however election to four seats was not completed for unknown reasons.

According to Ahmed Madobe’s list, two of the seats are reserved for women, while women and men contest can one, and the remaining seat will only be contested by men.

The four seats and how to compete are:

Seat 5: Layla Nuux Maax and Haredo Mohamed Sheikh

Seat 6: Ibrahim Awgaab Osman and Farhiya Maalim Abdi

Seat 7: Maryan Farah Kadiye and Samsam Mohamed Bishar

Seat 8: Hassan Dahir Yarow and Ali Mohamed Ali

The Jubaland Electoral Commission is set to announce the date of the election today, with it likely to be held later this week.

Once Jubbaland completes its elections to the Upper house, the majority of seats for the Upper house will be filled with the exception for two seats which belong to Galmudug.

The international community has been pressing Ahmed Abdi Karie (Qoor Qoor) the president of Galmudug state to complete the election to fill the remaining Galmudug seats. They have also warned him not to use the fighting against Ahlu Sunna as justification for delaying the election to the last two seats.

Somalia’s election, which was supposed to conclude in February, has faced many delays and obstacles due to disagreement between the federal government and regional authorities mainly Jubbaland and Puntland.
