Reports from Guriel town in Galgadud region in central Somalia confirm that Ahlu Sunna Waljama’a fighters have withdrawn from the turn after fighting between its forces and that of Galmudug security forces in alliance with Federal government forces.

The withdrawal of Ahlu Sunna forces from Guri’el district came after talks were facilitated by local businessmen and politicians, which eventually led to the withdrawal of Ahlu Sunna forces from their bases in the district, allowing government and Galmudug forces to take full control of Guriel district.

Ahlu Sunna forces who left Guriel district have reportedly reached Godwil village in the north of Guriel town in Galgadud region.

The sources added that Ahlu Sunna forces left their military bases in the university building and two armored vehicles seized by Ahlu Sunna fighters in Bohol area.

Federal Government and Galmudug forces were seen occupying areas around the university which were previously occupied Ahlu Sunna forces. This comes at a time when around 100,000 people were displaced during the fighting raising concern among the international community. As a result of involvement of US trained Danab forces the US is looking to review its support for the unit.
