Fierce urban fighting erupted early Monday in the strategic regional capital as the Somali army clashes with rebel forces for control of key city Baidoa, marking a sharp military escalation in the ongoing political struggle over Southwest State. According to local residents and security officials, armed opposition fighters loyal to ousted former regional president Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen launched a coordinated early-morning assault from multiple directions. Heavy gunfire and artillery exchanges echoed across central districts including Siliga, Boonkaay, and Mursal, forcing residents to take cover indoors while telecommunications services across the city experienced severe disruptions.

The sudden outbreak of violence represents the most intense military confrontation in Baidoa since March, when federal troops asserted direct control over the city following a bitter political dispute between Mogadishu and regional authorities. While spokespersons for the opposition forces initially claimed on social media that their fighters had penetrated central sectors and taken key administrative positions, government defense officials disputed those assertions. The Ministry of Defense stated that national forces successfully repelled the incoming attack, drove opposition fighters out of the city center, and maintained firm control over critical infrastructure and strategic installations.

Casualty figures remain fluid and difficult to independently verify due to ongoing security operations and interrupted communications. Local eyewitnesses and medical sources reported seeing dead bodies in the streets, with initial casualty estimates indicating at least ten people killed, including civilians struck by stray bullets inside their homes, and dozens of others injured. Military commanders stated that dozens of attacking fighters were neutralized during counter-offensive operations across the outskirts of the town.

The renewed clashes have triggered grave concerns among international humanitarian organizations operating in the region. As the administrative hub of Southwest State, Baidoa hosts hundreds of thousands of internally displaced persons who rely heavily on uninterrupted aid distributions and local health facilities. Relief agencies warn that sustained urban warfare risks worsening an already severe humanitarian crisis in a city where recent medical surveys indicate alarming rates of child malnutrition. Political analysts emphasize that peaceful dialogue between federal leaders and regional factions remains crucial to restoring stability and preventing further military escalation.
