Bayer Leverkusen won their first German Bundesliga title on Sunday with a 5-0 victory over Werder Bremen.

Xabi Alonso’s squad crushed Bremen in their home BayArena to win the league title with five games to spare.

Victor Boniface, a Nigerian attacker, scored the opening goal for Leverkusen after effectively converting a penalty in the 25th minute.

In the second half, Swiss midfielder Granit Xhaka and German star Florian Wirtz both scored outside the box to help Leverkusen win the Bundesliga this season.

In the 84th minute, Wirtz scored one-on-one off a long pass to give Leverkusen a 4-0 lead. After Wirtz scored his team’s fourth goal, several Leverkusen fans rushed onto the pitch to celebrate his achievement and their triumph.

Wirtz scored again in the 90th minute, completing his hat-trick.

Thousands of spectators celebrated when Leverkusen’s bus pulled into BayArena before the game.

Following the final whistle, exuberant fans returned to the ground to celebrate their team’s historic Bundesliga triumph alongside the players.

Alonso’s Leverkusen, who are having a great season, also halted Bayern Munich’s 11-year Bundesliga hegemony.

Leverkusen increased their point total to 79 in 29 matches. Their closest competitors, second-place Bayern Munich, have 63 points.

The 2023-24 Bundesliga season will conclude on May 18.
