In a landmark diplomatic step for the Horn of Africa, Somalia, Djibouti sign agreement to strengthen parliamentary cooperation following high-level bilateral talks between legislative leaders in Djibouti City. The formal memorandum of understanding was signed by Abdiqadir Mohamed Nur Jama, Speaker of the House of the People of the Federal Parliament of Somalia, and Dileita Mohamed Dileita, President of the National Assembly of Djibouti. The bilateral signing took place during a four-day official visit led by a senior Somali parliamentary delegation aiming to solidify institutional ties, exchange legislative best practices, and reinforce the long-standing diplomatic partnership between the neighboring nations.
Under the comprehensive memorandum, both national parliaments have committed to expanding direct institutional collaboration focused on modernizing lawmaking procedures, facilitating staff development, and conducting joint legal research. The agreement outlines clear frameworks for upgrading administrative operations, introducing modern parliamentary technology, and fortifying data security systems across both legislative chambers. Furthermore, the accord establishes parliamentary friendship groups and creates dedicated consultation mechanisms between standing committees to streamline regulatory oversight, improve policy coordination, and address shared regional priorities.
Beyond technical and administrative assistance, the legislative framework emphasizes the strategic necessity of aligning policy positions on global stages. Both delegations agreed to establish routine political dialogues and coordinate voting strategies across regional and international parliamentary assemblies, including the Inter-Parliamentary Union and African parliamentary bodies. Following the official signing ceremony, President Dileita welcomed the positive outcomes of the talks, highlighting that closer institutional ties between the two sister nations will significantly bolster regional governance, peace initiatives, and economic integration.
The legislative partnership arrives at a critical period as sovereign nations across East Africa seek predictable partnerships to navigate complex regional security dynamics, environmental pressures, and commercial trade goals. Somali parliamentary leaders reiterated that Mogadishu remains deeply committed to institutional knowledge-sharing and leveraging bilateral channels to safeguard national interests. As Somalia, Djibouti sign agreement to strengthen parliamentary cooperation, both legislative assemblies set a firm foundation for sustainable political alignment, ensuring that future lawmaking efforts across the Horn of Africa reflect shared democratic values and mutual stability.
