On Wednesday, the Chinese Embassy in Somalia gave approximately 140,000 US dollars to aid Somalis devastated by the continuing floods, which have displaced more than 1.7 million people across the country.

According to Chinese Ambassador to Somalia Fei Shengchao, the monies would be utilized to offer humanitarian assistance to Somalis devastated by floods caused by severe rainfall.

The Chinese, according to Fei, have watched Somalis suffering from terrible floods. He emphasized that China is the first country to directly support Somalia since the country was hit by catastrophic flooding in early October.

“China has decided to provide Somalia with 1 million yuan in cash as emergency assistance.” Furthermore, more than 1,000 tons of emergency food supplies will be delivered soon to support Somali disaster relief efforts. “These actions are concrete steps toward realizing the vision of a community with a shared future for humanity,” Fei told journalists in Mogadishu, Somalia’s capital.

The Chinese government has continuously stood by the Somali people in difficult conditions, and has vowed to help rebuild the economic infrastructure damaged by the floods, as well as to build dams. Fei said.

Mohamuud Moallim, commissioner of the Somalia Disaster Management Agency, spoke on behalf of the Somali government and thanked the Chinese government for its aid. “The Somali side will properly utilize Chinese assistance and provide timely relief to those affected by the disaster,” he said.
