The African Union Executive Council opens 49th session in Addis Ababa today, bringing together foreign ministers, diplomats, and senior officials from across the continent to forge a unified path toward sustainable development. The two-day ministerial gathering, hosted at the African Union headquarters in Ethiopia, is centered on the 2026 AU Theme of the Year: “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063”. As regional leaders convene, the session serves as a critical preparatory platform to shape the policy agenda ahead of the upcoming AU Assembly of Heads of State and Government.
Chairing the proceedings, Burundi’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation, Édouard Bizimana, welcomed delegates to a session marked by a sense of urgency regarding global economic shifts and climate-related challenges. African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf highlighted that the council is meeting amidst heightened global uncertainty, citing complex geopolitical tensions—including those in the Middle East and the Strait of Hormuz—that necessitate collective, well-informed African responses. In his address, United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa, Claver Gatete, emphasized that while inflation has eased in some sectors, the persistent high cost of food, energy, and finance demands that Africa prioritize domestic resource mobilization to fuel its own transformation.
Somalia is actively participating in these high-level deliberations, with Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Abdisalam Abdi Ali, leading the national delegation. During the summit, Somalia is expected to showcase its domestic initiatives in climate resilience, specifically highlighting the “Barwaaqo Water for Rural Resilience Project” and the recent installation of solar-powered boreholes designed to expand clean water access in underserved regions. The Somali delegation’s involvement underscores the nation’s commitment to contributing to broader discussions on strengthening AU institutional frameworks and advancing shared continental aspirations.
The agenda for the session remains packed with strategic priorities aimed at deepening regional integration and accelerating the implementation of Agenda 2063. Ministers are tasked with reviewing progress on existing institutional frameworks, evaluating water governance policies, and drafting formal decisions for adoption by the Assembly.
