High-level diplomatic negotiations across North and East Africa have intensified as Egypt exerts tremendous efforts to release sailors kidnapped off Somalia following the high-seas seizure of a commercial oil tanker earlier this year. Speaking in a broadcast interview, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty confirmed that Cairo is actively coordinating multi-channel diplomatic and security operations to secure the safe return of eight Egyptian crew members held hostage since May. The abduction occurred after armed pirates hijacked the Togolese-flagged vessel MT Eureka in Yemeni waters before navigating the ship toward the Puntland coast, where it remains anchored under armed guard.

Minister Abdelatty emphasized that the ongoing diplomatic campaign directly aligns with presidential directives issued by President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi to protect Egyptian citizens and safeguard maritime interests abroad. Federal officials in Cairo maintain daily operational contact with Somalia’s Foreign Minister Abdisalam Abdi Ali and regional administrative leaders to monitor the safety and physical condition of the captive crew members. Crucially, Somali state authorities are leveraging longstanding institutional and political ties with local clan elders in the coastal areas where the hijacked vessel is stationed to facilitate direct mediation and negotiate a peaceful resolution.

Because the hijacked commercial tanker is owned by a Yemeni national, Egyptian diplomatic channels remain in continuous contact with senior leadership in Aden and Sanaa, coordinating with Yemeni government representatives who speak daily with the vessel’s owner. Foreign Ministry representatives noted that Cairo’s experienced consular teams recently succeeded in securing the release and repatriation of four Egyptian sailors previously detained off the Iranian coast, expressing confidence that similar diplomatic frameworks will yield positive outcomes in the Horn of Africa.

The high-stakes hostage situation reflects broader maritime security vulnerabilities across strategic shipping lanes connecting the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, and the Indian Ocean. While multilateral naval task forces continue patrolling international shipping corridors, regional diplomatic coordination and local tribal engagement remain central to resolving localized piracy incidents. As mediation efforts progress off the Puntland coast, Egyptian and Somali officials reaffirmed their shared commitment to securing the immediate, unconditional release of the remaining crew members and returning them safely to their families.
