MOGADISHU, SOMALIA – February 18, 2025 – Operation Atalanta, the European Union Naval Force (EU NAVFOR) Somalia, has issued a warning about a potential increase in piracy activities off the coast of Somalia. The operation, which has been active since 2008, continues to monitor and respond to threats in the region.
Rising Threats
Recent intelligence suggests a resurgence in pirate activities, posing a significant risk to maritime traffic in the Gulf of Aden and the Western Indian Ocean. The EU NAVFOR has urged vessels to remain vigilant and adhere to recommended security measures to prevent attacks.
Ongoing Efforts
Operation Atalanta remains committed to protecting vulnerable shipping, including vessels of the World Food Programme (WFP) and other humanitarian aid shipments. The operation also works closely with multinational naval forces, such as NATO and the Combined Maritime Forces, to ensure the safety of maritime routes.
Call for International Cooperation
The EU NAVFOR has called for increased international cooperation to combat piracy effectively. This includes sharing intelligence, conducting joint patrols, and supporting regional efforts to enhance maritime security.
