    Football in Europe: Man City, Arsenal win the Manchester and London derbies

    English Premier League

    In a London derby during week eight of the English Premier League, Arsenal defeated Tottenham 3-1. Harry Kane scored the lone goal for his team, becoming the first player in Premier League history to reach 100 away goals.

    With the victory, the league’s top team, the Arsenal, increased their point total to 21; Tottenham, who suffered their first loss of the year, are now in third place with 17 points.

    Manchester City, the defending champion, defeated Manchester United 6-3 after dominating the Manchester derby from beginning to end. Two players who scored three goals each helped City defeat their opponent: Phil Foden (8, 44, and 72 minutes) and Erling Haaland (34, 37, and 64 minutes).

    The Norwegian superstar for the Citizens, Haaland, made history by becoming the first player in Premier League history to score a hat-trick in three straight home games.

    The game’s final score of nine goals makes it the Manchester derby with the most goals ever.

    Following that, Manchester City came in second with 20 points, followed by Manchester United in sixth with 12.

    While Liverpool drew 3-3 with Brighton at home, Chelsea defeated Crystal Palace by a score of 2-1. Liverpool now has 10 points after suffering its fifth loss of the year.

    Spanish La Liga

    Barcelona won 1-0 away against Mallorca in week 7 of the Spanish La Liga.

    Polish striker Robert Lewandowski scored the game-winning goal for Barcelona in the 20th minute. Lewandowski, 34, continued to hold the top spot in the top scorer chart despite having scored 9 goals in the previous 7 La Liga games.

    Real Madrid, the defending champion, and Osasuna drew 1-1 in the game on their home field. Los Merengues lost the lead and suffered their first league point loss.

    At the conclusion of La Liga’s seventh week, Barcelona, one of the teams with 19 points, took the lead with a goal differential, moving Real Madrid to second place.

    Italian Serie A

    Roma made a comeback in week 8 of the Italian Serie A, defeating Inter 2-1 away from home.

    With a match surplus, Roma increased their point total to 16 and moved up to fourth place in the league standings. With 12 points, Inter is in ninth place and 8 points behind Napoli, who are in first. Inter lost in Serie A for the second time straight after a rocky start to the year.

    Contrarily, Napoli, which had a strong start to the 2022–23 season, defeated Torino 3–1 at home, vaulting it to the top of the Serie A standings. Napoli increased its winning streak to four games and remains unbeaten in Serie A so far this season.

    With a 3-0 victory over Bologna, Juventus moved up to seventh place and gained 13 points.

    After a strong league start this year, Atalanta defeated Fiorentina by scoring just one goal. With the victory, the blue and black team has now matched Napoli, who are the league leaders, on points scored with 20.

    Fiorentina lost its third game in a row in Serie A before taking on Medipol Basaksehir of Turkey in Group A of the UEFA European Conference League. With nine points, Fiorentina moved up to position 11.

    In Serie A’s week 8 standings, Napoli is first with a goal differential of 20 points, followed by Atalanta in second place, Lazio in third, and Milan in fourth place, all with 17 points.

    German Bundesliga

    Borussia Dortmund suffered a road loss of 3-2 to Cologne in week 8 of the German Bundesliga. Borussia Dortmund’s point total remained at 15, while Cologne’s point total rose to 13.

    Union Berlin, the league’s top team, suffered a 0–2 road loss to Eintracht Frankfurt. After suffering their first Bundesliga defeat of the year, Union Berlin now has 17 points. On the other hand, Eintracht Frankfurt increased its point total to 14.

    Bayern Munich, the defending champion, defeated Bayer Leverkusen 4-0.

    Freiburg defeated Mainz 2-1, while Leipzig defeated Bochum 4-0 at home.

    After eight weeks of play, the league is now officially over. Union Berlin is in first place with 17 points and a goal differential, followed by Freiburg with the same number of points, while the defending champions Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund each have 15 points.

    French Ligue 1

    Week 9 of the French Ligue 1 saw Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) defeat Nice by a score of 2-1.

    Angers was defeated by Olympique Marseille 3-0.

    Undefeated PSG now has 25 points, two more than Olympique Marseille, its closest competitor.
