Reports indicate that armed pirates hijack Iranian fishing vessel off Somalia’s northeastern coast, taking control of the ship between the coastal towns of Bandar Beyla and Hafun in Puntland. According to alerts from the European Union’s Maritime Security Centre Indian Ocean, twelve armed assailants boarded and seized the Iranian-flagged fishing vessel Azini, which was carrying twenty-one Iranian fishermen and two Somali security guards. International maritime security agencies and regional naval forces immediately launched tracking investigations as the current status and physical condition of the twenty-three crew members on board remain unconfirmed.

The hijacking marks a troubling escalation in regional waters, where maritime monitors warn that the seized vessel could potentially be repurposed as a floating mother ship to stage long-range attacks against merchant shipping lanes across the Gulf of Aden and the wider Indian Ocean. Officers from the Puntland Maritime Police Force acknowledged the security breach off the Puntland coastline, noting that local authorities are working alongside international task forces, including EUNAVFOR’s Operation Atalanta, to monitor the vessel’s movement toward primary shipping corridors.

Security analysts observe that the incident reflects a persistent resurgence of maritime piracy off East Africa following a series of commercial ship attempted seizures and hijackings recorded over recent months. Regional government officials have repeatedly called for enhanced international naval support and resources, emphasizing that vast territorial waters remain vulnerable to armed groups seeking economic gain through maritime kidnapping and vessel seizures. While local security forces have previously conducted joint operations to free hijacked cargo vessels, naval task forces maintain active surveillance as pirates hijack Iranian fishing vessel off Somalia’s northeastern coast, underscoring the urgent need to secure commercial transit corridors and protect maritime crews operating in the region.
