The second day of talks between the Federal Republic of Somalia and the East African Community (EAC) has begun. The negotiations will remain until August 31st, when Somalia has finished the screening procedure to join the EAC.
Both teams are actively participating in talks on a variety of themes, including the Political, Legal, and Institutional; Infrastructure, Productive, and Social Sectors; and Economic and Trade Affairs clusters. By joining the EAC, Somalia would get access to the EAC’s regional infrastructure projects, such as roads, railroads, and energy networks. These initiatives seek to increase connection and, in turn, aid Somalia’s economic growth.
At the start of the discussions, EAC Secretary-General Peter Mathuki remarked, “Joining the EAC would enable Somalia to benefit from the EAC’s regional infrastructure projects, such as roads, railways, and energy networks.” These projects seek to boost connection while also assisting Somalia’s economic growth.”
The discussions aim to deepen EAC-Somalia collaboration, with an emphasis on supporting sustainable development and regional integration.
Both parties are dedicated to finding common ground and establishing a mutually beneficial deal as the conversations continue. All those interested in the future of the EAC and Somalia are keenly awaiting the conclusion of the negotiations.
