In a significant step toward bolstering Somalia’s healthcare infrastructure, Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre inaugurated a state-of-the-art emergency centre at De Martino Hospital in Mogadishu on January 25, 2025. The facility, constructed and equipped by Qatar Charity (QC), aims to address critical medical and emergency care needs for the Somali population. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Somali Minister of Health Dr. Ali Haji Adam, Qatar’s Ambassador Dr. Abdullah bin Salem al-Nuaimi, and a delegation from Qatar Charity, alongside Somali ministers and health officials.

The newly opened emergency centre is equipped with modern medical facilities, including surgical units, intensive care rooms, advanced laboratories, and a radiology department featuring X-ray and MRI machines. It also houses a fully stocked pharmacy to ensure comprehensive healthcare services. The centre is expected to significantly enhance the hospital’s capacity to handle emergencies and critical cases, filling a crucial gap in Somalia’s healthcare system.

During the inauguration, Prime Minister Barre toured the facility and praised its role in improving medical services for the Somali people. “This centre is a vital addition to our healthcare system and reflects our commitment to improving medical services for the Somali people,” he said. Barre also expressed deep gratitude to the State of Qatar and Qatar Charity for their unwavering support. “We are deeply grateful to the State of Qatar and Qatar Charity for their generous support in making this project a reality,” he added.

Abdulaziz Jassim Hejji, Director of Development Operations at Qatar Charity, highlighted the project’s significance in strengthening Somalia’s healthcare sector. “This centre is vital for enhancing the hospital’s capacity to handle emergency and critical cases,” he said. Hejji also emphasized that the initiative aligns with Qatar Charity’s broader mission to improve the quality of life for Somali citizens and enhance the country’s emergency response capabilities.

In addition to the emergency centre, Qatar Charity’s delegation laid the foundation stone for a medical supply warehouse in the Banadir region. The warehouse is expected to streamline the distribution of essential medical supplies, further supporting healthcare services in the area. The delegation also attended the implementation of the “Compassionate Hearts” campaign, which provided life-saving surgeries for 30 children with congenital heart defects. These initiatives were made possible through the generosity of the Qatari people.

Qatar Charity has been actively involved in Somalia’s development, particularly in the health and nutrition sectors. In 2024 alone, the organization implemented 16 projects worth over QR3.5 million, benefiting more than 58,000 people. These efforts underscore Qatar’s commitment to supporting Somalia’s recovery and development amid ongoing challenges.

The inauguration of the emergency centre marks a milestone in Somalia’s healthcare journey, offering hope for improved medical services and emergency care. As the country continues to rebuild its infrastructure, partnerships with organizations like Qatar Charity play a pivotal role in addressing critical needs and fostering sustainable development.

The event also highlights the strong bilateral ties between Qatar and Somalia, with both nations working collaboratively to achieve shared goals in healthcare and humanitarian aid. As the emergency centre begins operations, it stands as a testament to the power of international cooperation in transforming lives and building resilient communities.
