Security forces in central Somalia thwarted a major public safety threat on Thursday night after two suspected militants killed while planting landmines in Middle Shabelle region were confronted during an intelligence-led operation in Mahaday district. According to local law enforcement officials, Hirshabelle State police officers intercepted the two suspects at the town’s livestock market as they attempted to place explosive devices intended to target civilians and security personnel.
Mahaday Police Station Commander Colonel Suleyman Cowsey confirmed that security units mobilized immediately after receiving actionable intelligence regarding an imminent insurgent plot inside the bustling commercial venue. Armed police officers arrived at the market perimeter and engaged the suspects, shooting both individuals dead before they could detonate the devices. Following the engagement, authorities displayed the bodies of the slain suspects alongside an unexploded improvised explosive device recovered directly from the scene. Police officials noted that a second device exploded during the tactical operation, though no immediate details regarding casualties or structural damage were disclosed.
The successful intervention comes amid heightened security protocols across Hirshabelle State, where regional forces and federal military units have intensified counter-insurgency operations. Insurgent networks operating in southern and central regions frequently utilize improvised landmines, roadside bombs, and hidden explosives to disrupt public commerce, target government convoys, and intimidate local populations in vital agricultural hubs. Local municipal authorities praised the rapid police response, stating that eliminating the immediate hazard protected innocent shoppers and livestock traders who rely daily on the Mahaday market.
Regional security experts emphasize that public commercial hubs, transit corridors, and livestock centers remain primary targets for clandestine explosive deployments due to their high civilian density. State security agencies have urged community members and local traders to maintain vigilance and promptly report suspicious activities or unattended objects along major transit routes. As regional operations expand, Hirshabelle security leadership reaffirmed its commitment to securing rural markets, clearing strategic roadways, and disrupting insurgent logistics across Middle Shabelle.
