Somalia’s security forces step up pressure against insurgent networks after Somali forces kill 16 al-Shabaab militants, including senior operational operatives, during targeted military actions in the Middle Shabelle and Hiiraan regions. According to an official statement released by the National Intelligence and Security Agency, the joint operations were carried out in coordination with international security partners across central Somalia. The first strike focused on the Miirtaqwo area within the Middle Shabelle region, targeting a fortified compound designated as an al-Shabaab “Security House”. Defense officials confirmed that the facility served as a key storage and broadcast center for Radio Andalus, the insurgent group’s primary media propaganda network, destroying broadcasting equipment and technical gear stored on site.
The intelligence agency revealed that the Miirtaqwo operation resulted in the deaths of Abdisamad Mohamed, the head of the Radio Andalus propaganda unit, and operative Ali Salad, while another militant sustained severe injuries. Meanwhile, a secondary operation unfolded in the Tardo area of the Hiiraan region, where government forces intercepted al-Shabaab fighters assembling to launch coordinated ambushes on regional security outposts near Goobo and Waabweyn. Tactical units disrupted the mobilization, neutralizing remaining combatants and destroying enemy transport vehicles and military equipment intended for regional assaults. Security analysts note that targeting propaganda apparatuses alongside tactical staging grounds weakens the group’s operational reach across central Hirshabelle State.
The twin operations reflect an ongoing effort by the Somali National Army, intelligence services, and international partners to dismantle militant infrastructure across central and southern sectors. As security agencies maintain heightened domain awareness along primary transit corridors, military leadership reaffirmed its commitment to neutralizing insurgent hideouts, protecting civilian populations, and restoring permanent state authority across volatile rural districts.
