Holders of records Sevilla won their sixth UEFA Europa League title on Wednesday, defeating Roma 4-1 on penalties in Budapest.

Roma took the lead in the final at Puskas Arena.

Paulo Dybala, an Argentine forward for the Italian side, scored the opening goal in the 35th minute after Gianluca Mancini fired a through pass from the centre circle.

Sevilla tied the game in the 55th minute when Mancini scored an own goal off a pass from Jesus Navas.

Lucas Ocampos of Sevilla was sent off in the 75th minute, but the referee overturned the call after a VAR review.

After normal time finished 1-1, the game headed to overtime.

Roma defender Chris Smalling struck the crossbar near the end of the game.

Because neither club could score the winning goal in 30 minutes, the winner was decided by a penalty shootout.

Sevilla’s goals came from Ocampos, Erik Lamela, Ivan Rakitic, and Gonzalo Montiel.

Montiel retook his penalty following a VAR verdict to bring the Europa League title to Sevilla in 2023.

Meanwhile, Roma’s Bryan Cristante scored in the penalty shootout.

Mancini and Roger Ibanez of Roma, on the other hand, both missed their penalties.

Sevilla had won the UEFA Cup/Europa League in 2006, 2007, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2020, and they added another championship to their collection on Wednesday.

Roma unable to end ill fate in Europa League

Roma were defeated for the second time in this competition’s final, after losing the 1991 UEFA Cup final to Inter Milan.

Jose Mourinho, the head coach of Roma, also lost his first major UEFA event final in his career.

The veteran Portuguese coach has already won all five UEFA competition finals he has reached.

He won the 2003 UEFA Cup (renamed the Europa League in 2009) and the 2004 UEFA Champions League with Porto, the 2010 Champions League with Inter, and the 2017 Europa League trophy with England’s Manchester United before winning the third-tier UEFA Europa Conference League with Roma in 2022.
