    Short Biography of Minister of Health and Human Services, Federal Government of Somalia H.E DR Fowzia Abikar Nor

    Dr. Fawziya enrolled into the Faculty of Law at the Somali National University from which she graduated in February 1985.

    She obtained a Master’s degree in Health Services Management from the Istituto Superiore di Sanita’ in Rome, Italy.

    Dr. Fawziya Abikar Nur subsequently completed a PhD in Public Health from Universita’ Degli Studi di Roma, “La Sapienza”.

    She obtained a Master’s degree in Health Services Management from the Istituto Superiore di Sanita’ in Rome, Italy.

    Dr. Fawziya Abikar Nur subsequently completed a Ph.D. in Public Health from Universita’ Degli Studi di Roma, “La Sapienza”.

    Professional Background

    H.E. Dr. Fawziya began her career as an Assistant Lecturer at the Somali National University and has worked on poverty reduction training programs for health professional in developing countries at Rome University-Sapienza and Istituto Superiore di Sanita’.

    She worked in the field of health and human rights as a consultant for the World Health Organization (Somalia Country Office) conducting needs assessments for health projects, facilitating training activities, conducting monitoring and evaluation, and coordinating the Public Health law project in Somalia.

    H.E.   Dr.    Fawziya became the Minister of Health and Human Services in Somalia in March 2017, she is currently the longest-serving Minister of Health in the Federal Government of Somalia’s history. During her tenure at the Ministry,

    H.E. has worked on reforming the health system structure by creating evidence-based EPHs, updating the national HSSP III, and re-opening national referral hospitals, increasing the FGS’s impact on health care in Somalia.

    Similarly, revitalization of Intergovernmental and Health Sector coordination has been one of the key benchmarks reached by H.E. and it has enabled direct FMoH and WB collaboration which facilitated the reception of two major projects (Damal Caafimaad, RCRF, Covid 19 Vaccine) the country’s first direct projects executed by the FMoH.

    H.E. has demonstrated resilience in a time where global health has been affected very hard, she has made sure Somalia is not far behind other countries in preventing and controlling the spread of COVID-19.

    The Minister oversaw the National Health Professional Council’s approval by parliament, never the less but she also submitted National Medical Regulatory Act to the parliament. Moreover, throughout her term, HE Dr. Fawziya endorsed a number of health policies and initiatives, where she led the second Health Sector Strategic Planning (HSPP-II) and very soon will be issued the HSSP-III.

    In 2019, and 2020, Dr. Fawziya was awarded the prestigious ‘Award to Women in the World for their Political Engagement’ Anna Maria Mammoliti Award.
