The Somali Army participates in multinational military exercise in Turkey, marking another step in the expanding defence and security cooperation between Mogadishu and Ankara. According to early reports from defence-related sources and regional media coverage, Somali troops joined partner forces in structured drills aimed at improving interoperability, counterterrorism readiness, and operational coordination with allied militaries.

While official Somali defence statements have not released full details of the exercise, Turkey has long hosted and supported Somali military training programmes under broader bilateral agreements that have been in place for over a decade. These initiatives include structured training at facilities such as the TURKSOM military training base in Mogadishu, as well as advanced instruction provided in Turkey for selected Somali units.

The latest participation of Somali forces in multinational drills in Turkey reflects a continuation of this strategic partnership. Early reports indicate that the exercise involves personnel from multiple countries, focusing on joint operational scenarios, field coordination, and counter-insurgency tactics. For Somalia, which continues to face threats from the Al-Shabaab militant group, such training is considered important for strengthening the capacity of the Somali National Army and improving battlefield coordination with international partners.

Turkey has played a significant role in Somalia’s military development since formal defence cooperation agreements were expanded in the early 2010s, later leading to the establishment of its largest overseas military base in Mogadishu. Somali forces trained under these programmes have previously been deployed in counterterrorism operations across different regions of the country, particularly in southern and central Somalia.

Although neither side has publicly confirmed the full scope of units involved in the current exercise, analysts note that multinational drills in Turkey typically include a mix of tactical training, live-field simulations, and command-level coordination exercises. These are designed to enhance interoperability between participating forces and improve readiness for joint security missions.

For Somalia, participation in such exercises also carries broader diplomatic and strategic significance. It underscores the country’s ongoing efforts to rebuild its national army while strengthening alliances with international partners engaged in regional stability operations. However, officials continue to emphasize that operational details remain sensitive and subject to security considerations.

As Somalia continues its long-term security reform process, engagements like these are expected to remain part of broader efforts to professionalize the armed forces and improve coordination in the fight against insurgent groups.
