About Filsan Somalia
Filsan Inc. is a registered company in Somalia involved in various agriculture-related activities. Over the past few years Filsan, in partnership with the Somali Agriculture Technical Group (SATG), has actively demonstrated various need-based technologies in agriculture and has been credited with many landmark achievements in seed system development and related policy implications.
SATG’s Agri-business Incubation Centre (ABIC) in Afgoi, is a model research and demonstration site for many enthusiastic farmers and entrepreneurs interested in agricultural development.
Filsan is a wholly separate commercial entity that works closely with SATG to commercialize technologies that have been identified by SATG.
Filsan is actively engaged in commercial seed production of various crop species including maize, sorghum, selected legumes, sesame, and vegetables, and is planning to expand into vegetatively propagated crops including bananas and sweet potatoes. In addition, Filsan has recently established a soil lab offering soil testing and grain quality control services to farmers and development organizations.
The company’s interest is to engage in other sectors of the value chain including input supply and agriculture mechanization where it has technical expertise, there is profit making potential, and where these activities will improve the social welfare of the Somali farming community.
1. Seed Processing and Inputs supply department
This department is mainly focused on processing, packaging, and storing seeds of maize, sorghum, sesame, legumes, and vegetables. In addition, this department is also responsible for fertilizers (DAP and Urea) procurement, sale, storage, and distribution.
2. Laboratory services:
Filsan provides laboratory services on the following area:
a) Soil and water: provides services on soil and water analysis to various clients including farmers, development organizations, and NGOs. Soil nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium as well as soil pH and soil salinity are determined using soil Doc This will help farmers make an informed decision on soil amendments.
b) Seed and grain quality: Provides analysis on seed quality such as germination percentage, purity, and seed moisture. This lab also provides analysis on irrigation water use, seed-borne diseases, and insect infestation.
