    Somalia is scheduled to sign the East African Community’s Treaty of Accession today.

    Somali Magazine – Headquarters of the East African Community, Arusha, Tanzania, December 15, 2023: The Horn of Africa country, the Federal Republic of Somalia, is about to become a member of the East African Community as it is set to sign a Treaty of Accession with the organization today at State House in Entebbe, Uganda.

    Sheikh Hassan Mohamud, the president of Somalia, and H.E. Salva Kiir Mayardit, the president of the Republic of South Sudan, who chairs the Summit of EAC Heads of State, will sign the Treaty of Accession.

    Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the president of Uganda, will be present at the signing event. Among the dignitaries in attendance will be Hon. (Dr.) Peter Mutuku Mathuki, the Secretary General of the East Asia Conference.

    At their 23rd Ordinary Meeting in Arusha, Tanzania on November 24, 2023, the Heads of State of the East African Community (EAC) met and decided to admit Somalia as a full member of the EAC after reviewing the Report of the EAC Council of Ministers on the Negotiations with the Federal Republic of Somalia.

    The Summit also assigned H.E. Mayardit, the Summit Chairperson, the task of reaching a consensus with Somalia over the timing of signing the Treaty of Accession of Somalia into the Community.

    The Summit further mandated that Somalia deposit the instrument of ratification with the Secretary General within six (6) months following the Treaty of Accession’s signature.

    The EAC Council was also led by the heads of state.

    The Republic of Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Republic of Kenya, Republic of Rwanda, Republic of South Sudan, Republic of Uganda, and United Republic of Tanzania are additional partner states in Africa’s fastest-integrating bloc.
