President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of the Federal Republic of Somalia has outlined an ambitious energy vision for the nation at the Africa Energy Summit, held in Dar es Salaam. In his keynote address, President Mohamud emphasized the critical role of energy in driving Somalia’s development and modernization, while highlighting the country’s vast potential in renewable energy resources such as solar and wind power.

The President’s speech underscored the urgent need to address Somalia’s energy challenges, noting that nearly 50% of the population still lacks adequate access to electricity. He stressed that affordable and reliable energy is essential for economic growth, industrial development, and the modernization of infrastructure. “To achieve the progress we envision for Somalia, we need reliable and affordable energy. We are focusing on increasing energy investments to support industrial development, modernize infrastructure, and strengthen social services,” President Mohamud stated.

Accompanied by Minister of Energy and Water Abdillahi Bidhaan Warsame and Minister of Finance Bihi Imaan Eige, President Mohamud called on international investors to seize the opportunities in Somalia’s energy sector. He highlighted the country’s untapped renewable energy potential, which could position Somalia as a leader in sustainable energy solutions in the region. The President’s appeal aligns with Somalia’s broader goals of achieving energy security and reducing its reliance on traditional, non-renewable energy sources.

The Africa Energy Summit also saw the adoption of the “Dar es Salaam Statement,” a landmark commitment by African leaders to ensure that 300 million Africans gain access to sufficient electricity by 2030. This declaration reflects a continent-wide push to address energy poverty and harness renewable energy resources to drive sustainable development. For Somalia, this commitment represents a significant step forward in its efforts to expand energy access and improve the quality of life for its citizens.

Somalia’s energy sector has faced significant challenges, including decades of conflict, underinvestment, and limited infrastructure. However, the country’s abundant solar and wind resources offer a promising pathway to overcoming these obstacles. By leveraging these renewable energy sources, Somalia aims to not only meet its domestic energy needs but also contribute to regional energy stability.

President Mohamud’s address at the summit has been widely praised as a bold and forward-looking vision for Somalia’s energy future. His emphasis on international collaboration and investment underscores the importance of partnerships in achieving the country’s energy goals. The presence of key government officials, including the Ministers of Energy and Finance, further highlights the administration’s commitment to prioritizing energy as a cornerstone of national development.

The Africa Energy Summit has provided a platform for Somalia to showcase its potential and engage with global stakeholders. As the country continues to rebuild and modernize, the energy sector is poised to play a pivotal role in driving economic growth, creating jobs, and improving living standards. With the right investments and policies, Somalia could emerge as a model for renewable energy development in Africa.

In conclusion, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s participation in the Africa Energy Summit marks a significant milestone in Somalia’s journey toward energy security and sustainability. By harnessing its renewable energy potential and fostering international partnerships, Somalia is laying the foundation for a brighter, more prosperous future. The “Dar es Salaam Statement” further reinforces the continent’s collective commitment to addressing energy poverty and advancing sustainable development.
